SJSSN is a school for both boys and girls. The concept of the school was originally conceived by very Revd. Fr. James Seamus Hunter C.S.S.P, an Irish Holy Ghost Priest who came to Benue on missionary work. When he was posted to the St. Joseph Catholic Independent Mission Nyiman by the then Catholic Bishop, Makurdi Diocese, Rt. Revd. Dr. A.A. Usuh, Fr. Hunter saw the need to encourage the children in and around the parish to receive a sound education. As a Catholic school, founded in faith, we are propelled forward by a strong commitment to our values and their maintenance. As a school community, we measure ourselves by these values.
It strives for a community of students, teachers, ancillary staff and management which attempts to live by gospel values, recognising the dignity of each individual and working for justice and peace in society. The busy life of the school is conducted within the context of a calm, respectful and positive learning atmosphere.
Our dedicated teaching staff demonstrates a remarkable care of their students and a love of their subjects. This evident because the staff in SJSSN aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment where all the students are encouraged to achieve their potential.
Our national examination results reflect our commitment to excellence in teaching and learning and the achievement of high academic standards. Regular reports, careful monitoring and an awards system are all part of the culture that encourages each student to achieve his or her personal best. We make a strong commitment to the development of the whole person, and this is evident in our promotion of extra- and co-curricular activities. As a result, our students participate in a wide variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities. In addition, we encourage all members of the school community to participate in initiatives which promote care for our environment and beyond.
